How to safely scan a QR code

Use your phone's built-in scanner. Do not install free QR code scanner apps - they can be used by cyber criminals.

QR codes are used to help you move the verification onto a supported device. It's important to know that installing a third-party QR code scanner app can be risky - these apps offer cyber criminals ways to trick you into giving out personal information. Do not install free QR scanners from the App Store or Google Play; even paid apps can host criminal activity.

Android

If your phone can't scan a QR code automatically, use Google Lens. Check if you already have it: open your camera, tap More, then Settings, and activate Google Lens suggestions. If unavailable, install Google Lens from the Play Store.

iPhone

Use the built-in QR scanner inside the camera app, then tap the notification that appears to open the website.

You can also forward the link instead

If the QR code is giving you trouble, forward the SMS or email containing the link to another trusted, compatible device and complete the process there - see Is my device compatible?.
