What ID documents do I need to verify my identity?
For AML/CTF verification you generally need a passport, or an Australian driver licence, photo card or learner permit.
The number and type of documents requested varies with why you are being verified. If you don't have the minimum ID required, contact the business that asked you to verify your identity for assistance - alternative processes exist (see also our note on customers without standard ID).
AML/CTF (AUSTRAC-regulated) verification
Any one of:
- Australian passport
- International passport
- Australian driver licence, photo card or learner's permit
Multi-document / 100-point verification (e.g. conveyancing and real estate)
Choose one of the following combinations:
- Passport (Australian or international) plus an Australian driver licence, photo card or learner's permit (the NSW Digital Driver Licence is the only digital licence accepted)
- Passport (Australian or international) plus an Australian birth certificate, citizenship certificate or registration-by-descent certificate, plus a Medicare, Centrelink or Veteran's card
- Australian driver licence, photo card or learner's permit plus an Australian birth certificate, citizenship certificate or registration-by-descent certificate, plus a Medicare, Centrelink or Veteran's card
Documents are checked against Australian Government databases, so all documents must be Australian except the passport, and foreign passports need an Australian visa to be verified. Note that photo cards, proof-of-age cards and Veteran's cards can be submitted but are not verifiable against the government Document Verification Service (DVS), so a back-to-source check is not possible on those document types.
